Movie Review: The In-Between 2019
As a movie critic, I am excited to share my thoughts on the recently released indie film, The In-Between. Directed by Mindy Bledsoe and starring Jennifer Stone and Elizabeth Laidlaw, this film offers viewers an emotional journey that explores the complexities of life, love, grief and friendship.
The plot of The In-Between revolves around two childhood friends who reconnect after years of being apart as they deal with personal struggles. While there are elements of romance in the film, it is not a typical love story. Instead, it is a heart-wrenching exploration of loss and how people cope with pain in their own way.
The acting in this film is strong across the board. Jennifer Stone shines in her nuanced portrayal of Mads, a young woman who is struggling to come to terms with her mother’s death while navigating new relationships. Elizabeth Laidlaw delivers a powerful performance as Junior’s mother Betty.
Director Mindy Bledsoe has done an excellent job capturing both the beauty and melancholy of everyday moments through her lens while also creating tension when needed. The editing is smooth for most parts allowing for each scene to be experienced at its fullest.
One aspect that really stood out to me was the music score by David Maddox. It perfectly complemented every scene adding depth to emotions portrayed by each character effectively.
The production design did well in terms of setting up contrasting environments from rural Nebraska landscapes where Mads belongs from versus urban scenes where her father resides making it easier for viewers to distinguish between both worlds.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed The In-Between for its powerful themes and honest storytelling that left me feeling touched long after watching it. While some may find its pacing slow at times or lacking certain resolution points due to wanting more closure on specific matters concerning certain characters but this didn’t detract much from my overall experience
In conclusion, if you are looking for a moving drama with beautiful cinematography and solid acting that will challenge you emotionally, then I highly recommend giving The In-Between a chance.
