Movie Review: The Huntress: Rune of the Dead 2022
As a movie enthusiast, I was excited to watch the latest Scandinavian horror movie, The Huntress: Rune of the Dead. Expectations were high for this Nordic folklore-inspired film that promised spine-tingling terror. Unfortunately, it fell short of expectations.
The plot revolves around a brave warrior who returns home to her village only to find that it has been ravaged by an ancient curse. She must venture into the wilderness with her father and brother to find magical runes; she believes that these will reverse the cursed fate of her people. Although the story had potential, I found it poorly executed and predictable.
While some actors delivered good performances, others seemed wooden in their roles. The lead actress Moa Enqvist Stefansdotter brought strength and depth to her character as a female warrior fighting against insurmountable odds; however, other characters lacked development and fell flat.
Director Rasmus Tirzitis did an excellent job creating eerie scenery in beautiful Swedish landscapes. However, there were times when I thought some scenes were unnecessarily drawn out or poorly edited.
The score was generally adequate but failed to enhance the overall mood of certain scenes effectively. While special effects were used moderately in this low-budget film–I appreciated how they managed them within their constraints–they still left much to be desired in terms of quality at times.
Despite its shortcomings though, there are aspects worth praising about The Huntress: Rune of the Dead such as its production design—trying as best they can with limited resources—and cinematography—the picturesque landscape earns accolades which beautifully capture a stark contrast between tranquil settings drenched in natural light vis-a-vis dark mystical imagery shrouded with gloom and mystery—although both have room for improvement still.
Overall, The Huntress: Rune of the Dead is one for hardcore Nordic horror fans only who don’t mind mediocre production value yet enjoy engaging storytelling aligned with folkloric themes rooted within Viking mythology—where normal humans intersect with realm of magic and legends. If you’re looking for a scary thrill ride though, this movie might leave you wanting.
