Movie Review: Lingua Franca 2020
Lingua Franca is a beautiful and profound movie that explores the complexities of identity, love, and human connections. Directed by Isabel Sandoval, this film tells the story of an undocumented Filipina trans woman named Olivia (played by Sandoval herself) who works as a caregiver for an elderly Russian-Jewish woman in Brooklyn.
The plot follows Olivia’s struggle to find love and stability in her life while facing both personal and societal challenges. Throughout the movie, we see how she navigates her relationships with people from different backgrounds who hold different beliefs about sexuality, gender identity, and immigration.
One of the most remarkable things about Lingua Franca is its understated yet powerful acting. Sandoval delivers an incredibly nuanced performance that captures both the vulnerability and strength of Olivia’s character. She also has great chemistry with her co-stars Eamon Farren (Alex), Lev Gorn (Olga), and Lynn Cohen (Mildred).

While it might not be for everyone due to its slow pace and heavy subject matter at times – I believe it offers an important perspective on issues that are often overlooked or dismissed in mainstream media today.
