Movie Review: July Rising 2019
I recently had the opportunity to watch the film July Rising, and I have to say, it was a rollercoaster of emotions. The plot is centered around two estranged sisters who come together after their father passes away. One sister is struggling with addiction while the other is dealing with the aftermath of a failed marriage.
The acting in this film was truly outstanding, especially from lead actresses Nakia Secrest and Alexzandra Byrd. They were able to convey such raw emotion throughout the entirety of the movie, which really drew me in and kept me invested in their story.
The direction by Mark Cartier was also impressive. He did an excellent job at capturing both the beauty and harsh realities of small-town life. The cinematography was breathtaking as well, with stunning shots of mountains and fields that really helped set the tone for each scene.
The score perfectly complemented each moment in the film, from uplifting moments to heartbreaking ones. It added an additional layer of emotional depth that made me feel completely immersed in what I was watching.
The production design felt authentic and realistic, especially when it came to showcasing rural America. And while there weren’t many special effects per se, there were some great editing choices that helped drive home certain pivotal moments.
Perhaps my favorite part of this movie though was its honesty when it comes to addiction and mental health struggles. It tackled those topics head-on without glamorizing or sugar-coating anything – something we don’t see often enough on screen.
Overall, July Rising is a powerful film that will stay with you long after its credits roll. While it’s not perfect – there are certainly some pacing issues here and there – it’s definitely worth watching if you’re looking for something emotionally-driven yet authentic feeling.
