Movie Review: Go Back to China 2019
As soon as the movie Go Back to China starts, the audience is thrown right into a world filled with luxury cars, designer clothes, and a party-filled lifestyle. The film’s protagonist Sasha Li (played by Anna Akana) is living her best life as an entitled fashion influencer in Los Angeles until her father cuts off her allowance and demands that she move back to China to work at his toy factory.
The plot of the film is thought-provoking and engaging. The story explores the complexities of cultural identity, family expectations, and generational differences. Director Emily Ting does an excellent job of balancing humor with emotional depth.
The acting in this movie was exceptional. Anna Akana delivered an outstanding performance as Sasha Li, portraying the character’s evolution from selfishness to selflessness convincingly. Moreover, Lynn Chen portraying Sasha’s sister Carol was fascinating. She brought depth and substance to a character that some viewers might have found irritating.
Cinematography-wise Go Back To China was brilliant in capturing both LA’s affluent lifestyles and China’s crowded streets perfectly. The Production design did a great job of adding authenticity to places like factories or even nightclubs through some flashy lights.
However, while I enjoyed most elements of this film thoroughly, the soundtrack felt out of place at times. The dialogue occasionally came off as corny at certain points too; however these flaws were minor compared to its overall quality.
Overall Go Back To China left me impressed with its emotional honesty while providing insightful commentary on topics like cultural identity politics within families or economic globalization without being preachy about it. This movie is definitely worth watching if you’re looking for something thought-provoking yet enjoyable!
