Movie Review: Before You Know It 2019
As I sat down to watch ‘Before You Know It’, I wasn’t sure what to expect. However, it didn’t take long for the film to capture me with its delightful quirkiness and endearing characters.
First and foremost, the performances in this movie are top-notch. The two leading ladies – co-writers Hannah Pearl Utt and Jen Tullock – play sisters Rachel and Jackie respectively, who have a complicated relationship but a deep love for each other that shines through. Their chemistry is natural and effortless, making them extremely relatable.
The supporting cast is equally impressive, especially Mandy Patinkin as their estranged father Mel and Judith Light as his flamboyant girlfriend. Every character feels fully fleshed out with their own quirks and personalities.
Director Utt’s vision for this film is unique and playful, which perfectly complements the somewhat absurdist nature of the plot. The story follows Rachel’s journey as she discovers that her presumed-dead mother (played by Lynn Cohen) is actually alive and running a community theatre in upstate New York.
The movie balances its comedic moments with heartfelt emotion seamlessly. It never feels like it’s trying too hard or getting too bogged down in sentimentality.
Additionally, the cinematography captures the bleakness of New York City during winter beautifully while contrastingly portraying upstate New York in a more comforting light through warm colors that highlight an inviting atmosphere at this small town theater society. The score enhances these visuals nicely with its nostalgic feel that resonates strongly past one sitting on their couch or chair after viewing it
There are elements of production design that were quite captivating such as when Rachel was getting make-up put on before her stage performance; all of these small details makes you feel like you’re right there along with our protagonists.
Overall,’Before You Know It’ hits all the right notes for an engaging indie comedy-drama film experience thanks to its talented cast, smart direction, and a warmhearted story. I highly recommend this film to anyone looking for a unique take on family dynamics and the bonds that hold us together.
