30/30 Vision: Three Decades of Strand Releasing is an incredible documentary that takes us on a journey through the history of independent cinema. Exploring the thirty-year legacy of Strand Releasing, it showcases some of the most impactful films and filmmakers that have graced our screens in recent years.
The film features interviews with some of the biggest names in cinema, including Gus Van Sant, John Waters and Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Hearing their insights into what makes a great movie is fascinating and inspiring. It’s clear that these filmmakers are passionate about their craft, and they have been instrumental in shaping the world of independent cinema as we know it today.
The production value is top-notch, with stunning cinematography showcasing clips from some of Strand Releasing’s most iconic movies. The editing is slick and well-paced, keeping us engaged throughout the entire runtime.
What really resonated with me was how this documentary highlighted diversity in filmmaking – many directors featured were women or people of colour who have had to fight their way to be heard in an industry dominated by white men. By celebrating these voices and stories that might not otherwise be told, 30/30 Vision reminds us why independent cinema is so important.
However, there were moments where I felt like certain segments could have been explored more deeply. For example, while it was wonderful to hear from filmmakers such as Cheryl Dunye and Gregg Araki about their experiences making groundbreaking LGBTQ+ films back when representation was scarce – I would’ve loved to see more archival footage from those movies too.
Overall though, I highly recommend 30/30 Vision: Three Decades of Strand Releasing for anyone interested in learning more about independent cinema or film history as a whole. It’s a celebration of creativity and diversity that will leave you feeling inspired to support more original voices in filmmaking.
