Phil and Claire Foster (Steve Carell and Tina Fey) are a married couple from New Jersey with two children whose domestic life has become routine. Phil is a tax advisor while Claire is a realtor. They have a weekly "date night" at a local steakhouse followed by a movie, where they talk about work and make guesses on each couple's stories in the restaurant, but it is just as routine as everything else in their marriage. They learn during their book club that their best friends, Brad (Mark Ruffalo) and Haley (Kristen Wiig), have become bored by their marriage and are getting a divorce due to their lame routines, hoping each other will find someone else more exciting than themselves while they still remain as just friends; which mirrors Phil and Claire's marriage.
On its opening weekend, 20th Century Fox reported that Date Night pulled in $27.1 million, about $200,000 more than Warner Bros. reported for Clash of the Titans. In a recount, Clash of the Titans retained the No. 1 spot for a second-straight weekend with $26.6 million. Date Night debuted in second-place with $25.2 million, nearly $2 million less than distributor 20th Century Fox had reported a day earlier. As of April 11, the film has grossed $25,207,599 in the United States and Canada and $7,100,000 in foreign countries totaling a worldwide gross of $32,307,599.
